The Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area is situated within the Vihorlat Mountains in eastern Slovakia's Prešov region. The area is recognized primarily for its ancient beech forests, including primeval woodlands that gained UNESCO World Heritage Site status as part of the 'Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.' The landscape is of volcanic origin featuring rugged hills, dense forests, and unique volcanic lakes such as Sninský kameň and the rare Morské oko, a glacier-origin lake which offers striking scenic vistas and supports diverse aquatic life. The region’s ecology includes a broad variety of plants and animal species, including large mammals such as red deer and European lynx, alongside protected bird species. The area provides extensive outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife observation. Trails range from easier forest walks to more challenging ridge hikes. The Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area also preserves cultural and historical elements with traditional villages at its foothills and archaeological sites.
